You see, someone who fosters hope of success in what you are attempting to accomplish fall into this special category. Sometimes they challenge your thoughts and or actions to make you think about what and how you are doing it. Thank God for them and you will be on your way to a better life. Scorning them will most likely lead you down a path to failure. Now, I'm not talking about false hope and foolish prideful ploys to get you to say or do what someone wants done or said for their benefit. No. I mean when someone has your best interest at heart and speaks wisdom to you that builds you up and or challenges your abilities to accomplish a worth while goal in life. Then,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], you can add that person to your SET List. Time is limited for each of us. So, let us use it wisely.
Having been a college coach myself of a sport that I too had played in high school and college, namely the game of golf, I learned a thing or two about life during my twelve years at Liberty University training Champions for Christ as Dr. Jerry Falwell called them. My attitude was horrible and the words that came out of my mouth were less than honorable at that young and foolish age. My temper was red hot and down right embarrassing for those who found themselves playing golf with me. I often told player's to think about what they were doing to harm them selves as well as others on our team. It is like you and me telling mom and dad that we knew it all and did not need them. Did you laugh about me suggesting that a golfer can be taught something about the real world and or life while on a golf course? If you did, you don't play golf. Nevertheless, you could learn a thing or two from a golfer about life if they took up the challenges with and open mind and a willing spirit. I promise you he or she knows things. Golfers find out that others stand around and watch your mistakes. They not only watch them, they laugh and make jokes about the results of your hours of hard practice. The highs and lows during a golf round make for pictures of a person's inner control and patience. Life is also a lot about what happens just after a good thing, too often a bad thing. Then, what do you do? Do you throw up your hands and quit? No. Not as a golfer you don't and neither should we quit on life or a project. You must find a way to finish even if it means that you blame other things or people.
Sorry, I just fell back on one of the things I learned on the golf course. Of course, everything you learn out there is not uplifting nor wonderful. I came home after a game of golf and my wife said,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], "What do you do out there? You leave here in a great mood excited about the day's golfing prospects and come home so depressed." "Well, Dear,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], I feel good about not throwing my clubs nor did I curse one time." "Frank, you will be 68 years old, you should not still be throwing clubs and you are a Christian who has given up the dirty little curse words. My wife is at the top of my SET List because she cares more about me than anyone alive today. Or alternatively, she could think “She’s just a spoiled brat and excelling because her parents can afford a private swimming coach”. And she’d probably feel irritable, even resentful. Thoughts like company. When a negative thought enters your mind and is allowed to become the content of your mind, very quickly other thoughts will appear to support it. Before you know it, a small negative though has snowballed and you feel miserable, stressed, angry, tense or fearful depending on what your thoughts are. This is where awareness of your thoughts is powerful. You notice a thought and can actively CHOOSE to greet it which ever way you feel is appropriate. You can allow the thought to become the content of your mind and snowball OR you can treat it as what it is,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], just a though,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and say “Uh, that’s a fearful thought right there. Nice to see you, but I don’t really have time for you right now.” Remember, thoughts are powerful only when you give them power. You could feel the tension in your body, tight muscles, clenched jaw, faster heartbeat,… If you were just observing this fight, you’d probably be able to see what’s really going on and perhaps be able to suggest some sensible solutions. Distancing yourself from your thoughts can help you become an observer of them. That way, you don’t have to feel every thought. Your body does not have to respond to each thought.
When a negative thought enters your mind, recognise it as such and even speak to it! “Now you’re a negative thought aren’t you, I don’t really want you around right now”. Consciously bring up a more skillful thought, something worth while thinking about or simply observe your breathing for a while. Just let it go.
I’ve often written about the power of the mind and how detrimental the common condition we can call “monkey mind” is to our health. Monkey mind is such a good description of thoughts jumping around in our heads from past events (what could have/ should have/ would have happened), to what the future holds, the dreaded TO DO list, what’s for supper,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], how to deal with a disagreement with a neighbour, random song lyrics, and so on. Endless stream of thoughts.
I trust you all know just how much stress affects your well being and your general health and that’s not what this newsletter is about. This newsletter is simply about thoughts. JUST thoughts. Yes, JUST thoughts. That truly sounds like a major contradiction at a time when we are constantly being told by psychologist, scientists, motivational speakers, self-help and self-development books and magazine articles how powerful and important our thoughts are. And thoughts certainly are powerful when given energy, but until that point they are ONLY thoughts.
We are all thinkers to various degrees. A lot of the time thinking is clearly a very good thing but a constant onslaught of thought… very draining indeed. Not just on our minds but our bodies too. This is a good time to make yourself a cuppa and get comfortable, this is by far the longest of my newsletters to date! I hope you enjoy it.

This whole time, you've believed you have an emotional eating problem, when you really have a scientific,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], medical problem. Unfortunately, just like a worn out parent, you now have a worn out pancreas.
The temper tantrums example works well to help describe a growing problem with your pancreas too. Over time, the child's tantrums would have to get more creative or much stronger or much worse to have the same effect on the parent. In other words,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the child would have to work harder each time to get the same response from the parent. The parent builds up a resistance to the behavior What may have started as light crying and whimpering, might have grown into extreme whining and eventually became all out screaming, yelling, crying, hitting and kicking - even biting. This same child,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], as a teenager, would be a scary force to deal with.
Now, you don't want to completely ignore your brain, like you might a naughty child, but you also don't have to come running and give in to every single demand. If you see hyperphagia for what it is, which is not emotional eating at all, but rather a scientific problem, then you will be able to control your unruly toddler or your unruly brain and as a result you will be able to tackle the largest factor that is keeping you fat.
When this happens, you feel terrible and it has nothing to do with emotional eating. You get cranky, feel faint, get headaches and feel like you are going to starve. But take a deep breath, because this is just your brain having a temper tantrum.
I know the information that I have laid out here seems like the situation is beyond your control, but it's not. The good news is that you may not be diabetic yet, instead you might only have gotten as far as Metabolic Syndrome.
To help you understand the difference between emotional eating and insulin resistance a little better, just imagine the child with the terrible behavior again.
When your brain gets grumpy because it has dropped into the low glycemic range and begins to throws its daily, sometimes hourly, hissy fit or temper tantrum,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], you have the choice to give it more sugar or you can choose to give it protein and complex carbohydrates. If you give it more sugar,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], you just create the conditions for another hissy fit in a couple of hours, when you drop into the low blood sugar range again. If you give it protein and complex carbohydrates, then you will not spike your blood sugar, and you will not create the conditions for another temper tantrum in two or three hours.
Now you understand the bigger picture. Emotional eating and habitual eating are definitely part of the problem,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but until we conquer hyperphagia or the brain's regular hissy fits,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], you can never truly get back control of your health and your life.

However, just like with parenting, each time your child behaves this way, you have a choice as to how you will respond to your child, or in this case, respond to your brain's demand for glucose. Will you give it everything it seems to want, even if it means your child will grow up to be a spoiled rotten brat or will you give that child what he or she needs, which can sometimes be tough love and discipline.

The truth is that we don't stand for this with our children, so why do we stand for this with our bodies. Your brain screams for food and you instantly give it more sugar. Two hours go by and it screams again and you give it more sugar. Your brain, just like a defiant child, can be fairly crafty and manipulative, too. Your brain will actually try to make you believe that you will die if you don't get sugar.
Stop spiking your blood sugar! You have been on a blood sugar roller coaster for far too long. You eat a high sugar meal, which spikes your blood sugar and for a short time, you become hyper-glycemic (high blood sugar).
Then you come down off this high and your body drops into a low blood sugar range called hypo-glycemia. When this happens, your brain freaks out and starts to panic because it needs glucose (sugar) to function and so it starts screaming at you to eat more sugar.
Remember when your child threw himself or herself down on the floor and started kicking his or her feet and screaming and crying. It's exactly the same thing. Your brain is throwing a hissy fit. It's behaving like a spoiled child,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
The same is true with your pancreas. You have been indulging the sugar cravings for so long that your pancreas must now work harder each time to produce the same amount of insulin and it must produce more insulin each time to deal with the same amount of sugar. That's because your brain has cried wolf so many times that your pancreas doesn't leap off the couch anymore to respond to the temper tantrum. It's like he or she doesn't care anymore what the child does or doesn't do,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
Can you imagine living with a child, who can't communicate well because he or she is a toddler and having that child throw a temper tantrum every two or three hours every day and every night forever. My guess is that the parent would eventually want to get rid of the child.
You see, the brain does not care where the sugar comes from and all foods have some sugar. Your brain doesn't need a lot to be happy and it doesn't need the sugar to be simple or highly processed. If you give your body some protein or complex carbohydrates, your brain will be just as happy as if you gave it a double fudge, banana split sundae with caramel, nuts and colored sprinkles. Unlike children, your brain, in fact, likes broccoli and spinach.

If you have children, remember to keep track of your own needs as well theirs, and find ways to meet your needs even if it means not meeting their needs perfectly.

Leave an abusive work or home situation if you can’t change it. This includes mental, emotional, and physical abuse. If you are an abuser, get counseling.

Here’s a thumbnail sketch that can get you started with your own personal list.
Eat whole, natural foods (preferably organic), drink plenty of clean water, and take a good multivitamin.
Recognize, accept, and acknowledge out-of-balance emotions,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but at the same time, take a dispassionate view of them.
One way to help bring your life into balance is to identify the areas where you’re at an extreme in your life and then to take small, simple steps to begin to bring that part of your life back to center.

Get some type of exercise every day. That doesn’t have to mean a trip to the gym for a killer ninety minutes of aerobics. It can mean a walk after dinner, a bike ride with the kids, or some time in the garden. The point is to move your body.
There are two working adults in the house, split housework and cooking fairly. Forget about being superwoman.
But how can you take care of your loved ones if you’re sick? How can you help others have a high quality of life if your own quality of life is low,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]?
Tell your partner if something is bothering you. Don’t let small irritations build up into anger.
